Welcome to the high country of northern Arizona, a mountain plateau covered with ponderosa pine, open meadows and the remnants of ancient volcanos. Rising to a high point of 12,643 feet, the San Francisco Peaks dominate the region, echoed by smaller cinder cones spreading across northern Arizona. To the north, the Grand Canyon rips though the plateau, separating the Arizona Strip from the remainder of the state. To the south, the Mogollon Rim, a 2,000 foot high escarpment divides the highlands from the desert that dominates the mid and southwestern regions of the state.
Residents of Northern Arizona take a protective stance when considering the region. This is their home, the
land that gives them life and opportunity. They welcome the tourists that flood through the town but in turn celebrate
the sense of living in a small town surrounded by a wealth of recreation, history and the natural sciences. So maybe
they whine a little when the bad weather hangs around a bit long but they love Arizona and step up to protect it from
anyone who find this land wanting some element of another place.
Morten Moore Publishing reflects this region and the people who live here in the selections we choose to publish. Our
first book on hiking with children came about when there were no other books that catered specifically to families. Since
that time the market has exploded with guides to hiking and recreation across the state.
A second book was inspired by the experiences of the first when the author, Eileen Moore, kept stumbling across the
fire towers that stand guard over the largest yellow pine forest in the world right here in Northern Arizona.
Then, a second author approached us about her concerns for the hard economic times and the difficulties of raising
food in a stubborn climate. Her book, Farm Your Front Yard, looks back at the days of the Victory Gardens and shares the
secrets of being successful in growing vegetables and flowers in northern Arizona’s tough, arid climate. Her practical tips
resonate with a wide range of ages and talent.
At a time, when hard copy publishing is struggling, Morten Moore Publishing, seeks to fill a niche, appealing to it’s home
region with books that are interesting and involve the reader in the history, recreation and natural world that surround us.
